So let me talk about the Five Elements in Taoism.
The five elements are used quite often in Eastern magic like in Chinese Medicine. So let me explain a few things:
There are two cycles The Generating Cycle, Sheng, and the Controlling Cycle, Ke. These cycles represent balance and Harmony in the system.
The other cycles are Overacting, Cheng, and Insulting, Wu. These represent imbalance and dysharmony. Together these cycles allow the five elements to function in harmony, both in the natural world and within our bodies and mind.
Let’s take a little closer look shall we?
The Sheng cycle, also known as the Generation Cycle, is a relationship that nourishes and supports between elements. Just like a mother and her child.
To give another example think about the natural world:
Water generates wood—-Rain helps give trees nutrition
Wood generates fire—- in the way of burning.
So on and so fourth. I hope this makes since. :D
Now let’s go to the Control Cycle, which is also known as the Destruction Cycle or Ke. This is the relationship that prevents any given element from becoming overwhelming, to powerful in the system as a whole. A good way to think of this is like Checks and Balances.
Next up is the Overacting Cycle or the Cheng Cycle. Imbalances within Ke can create the Cheng cycle. Instead of “controlling”, the element damages by exerting too much control hence the overreact. Kind of like a parent when they meet some of their kids friends. :D
Last is the Insulting Cycle or the Wu Cycle. This is another instance of unbalance. Instead of the “control” the element is forced back upon itself. A really good example of this is in the natural world: when water floods the banks of rivers and washes earth away instead of the earth acting as a barrier for a river..
So there you go that is my little explanation of the five elements for ya.

This is the PYRAMID SCHEME of the Chaos Elemental System I created many years ago (started around 1996 as a much more basic scheme, and I kept evolving it from then). This system somewhat sums up my cosmological and magical framework. The overarching theory is based on Chaos as the main entity that is responsible for the universe’s existence, so this system is called the Chaos Elemental System (CES). The elements and forces in this system are divided into five classes that help distinguish their level and elemental breakdown. These classes do not necessarily denote the strength of an element, as it is more about skill and strategy than anything else that will determine the element’s effectiveness. So here are the very basics (as I can go on FOREVER with this kind of stuff):Each element has a sigil, is known by alternative names, can be created through the combination or manipulation of other elements, has different uses or levels of use, and has many correspondences. YES, they do correspond with soem of the cosmology of the planes!
CLASS 1: RELATIVE FORCES
The Class 1 elements, also known as the relative forces, are the most fundamental forces in all of magic and living in general. It is the ability to draw and send energy. All entities must be able to use these forces in at least some limited capacity. Otherwise, they might as well not be considered alive.Heal - The Coming Spiral aka positive, clock-wise, rejuvenation, drawing, waxing, flow, gatheringPsychic - The Leaving Spiral aka negative, counter clock-wise, sending, ebb, waning, fracturing
CLASS 2: BASIC ELEMENTS
The Class 2 elements, also known as the Basic Elements, are the four Hermetic elements that nearly everyone will recognize. They are used in almost every magic system, and their correspondences are deeply categorized in almost all cultures. These basic elements are some of the simplest to manipulate and combine, and almost every living entity must consist of some balance of these energies. Earth - The Green Trapezoid aka solids, rock, stone, the body, the physicalWater - The Blue Drop aka liquids, sea, ocean, the soul, the emotionalAir - The Yellow Oval aka gases, wind, vapour, the mind, the intellectualFire - The Red Diamond aka heat, flame, combustion, the spirit, the will
CLASS 3: ADVANCED ELEMENTS
The Class 3 elements, also known as the Advanced Elements, can be very tricky to work with because they are not as tangible as the Basic Elements, which can lead to unpredictable results. These elements are often considered the combination of two compatible Basic Elements, but are not easily split back into their basic components. These elements are required to maintain the self throughout existence. Their regulational and fixed nature serve as a stabilizing force and are essential for stasis, progression, and suppression.Forest - The Green Leaf (EARTH + WATER) aka growth, nature, generation, productivity, prosperity Ice - The Cyan Crystal (WATER + AIR) aka cold, freeze, frost, acceptance, tolerance Lightning- The Purple Dagger (AIR + FIRE) aka electricity, spark, shock, wit, insight Sun- The Orange Flame (FIRE + EARTH) aka light, luminescence, radiance, charity, benevolence Space - The Grey Fan (EARTH + AIR) aka dimension, plane, realm, presence, expositionTime - The Bronze Dial (WATER + FIRE) aka eternity, chronos, transition, patience, transience
CLASS 4: COMPLEX ELEMENTS
The Class 4 elements, also known as the Complex Elements, are a little more abstract than the Advanced Elements. These elements have to do with manipulating how energy forces work and can be used to assist or enhance certain attributes. Caution must be used while trying to manipulate these elements as many have fallen for their tempting applications, losing themselves completely. Holy - The White Flower (EARTH + WATER + FIRE) or (FOREST + SUN + TIME) aka sacred, diffusion, harmony, duty, responsibilityMoon - The Indigo Crescents (WATER + EARTH + AIR) or (ICE + FOREST + SPACE) aka reflection, delusion, mirror, empathy, sensitivity Shadow - The Black Pyramid (AIR + FIRE + WATER) or (LIGHTNING + ICE + TIME) aka demonic, focus, intensifying, manipulation, controlStar - The Fuchsia Pentagram (FIRE + EARTH + AIR) or (SUN + LIGHTNING + SPACE) aka projection, illusion, glamour, imagination, exhibitionIaru - Hidden Earth (FOREST + SUN + SPACE) aka “Heaven”Narakh - Hidden Air (LIGHTNING + ICE + SPACE) aka “Hell”Sheol - Hidden Water (ICE + FOREST + TIME) aka “Limbo”Purgatory - Hidden Fire (SUN + LIGHTNING + TIME) aka “Purgatory” lol, yeah, I know. It’s self-named
CLASS 5: ABSTRACT ELEMENTS
The Class 5 elements, also known as the Abstract Forces, are the oldest forces to exist. They mirror the Heal and Psychic elements in that they are the ultimate positive and negative forces. They are the forces whose dance makes up Chaos and the whole of Fate and the universe. However, it is almost impossible to describe these forces because of how abstract they are. Their manipulation requires great skill, and there is always the danger of becoming consumed by the force no matter how much experience one has with them.Void aka nothingness, non-elemental, destruction, abyssCreation aka everything, all-elemental, divinity, infinity
OVERARCHING ENTITY: CHAOS
You may understand this as Quantum Foam and all that very lovely stuff that creates something from nothing and makes possibilities happen.
